Bourbon Street Safety Guide: Local Tips & Pickpockets
Inside the Neon Chaos Bourbon Street is famous worldwide for its wild nightlife, open-container laws, and historic bars. By night, blocks 100 to 600 are closed to vehicle traffic and pack with thousands of visitors.
While the heavy police presence makes violent crime rare, the density of crowds creates a playground for pickpockets and opportunists.
1. How to Protect Your Pockets Crowded streets are a pickpocket's dream. They rely on the "bump-and-grab" technique. * Front Pockets Only: Keep your phone and wallet in your front pockets. Never keep them in your back pocket or in an unzipped purse. * Hand on Wallet: In tight crowds or around street performers, put your hand in your pocket over your phone/wallet. * Fanny Packs & Crossbody Bags: Wear bags across your chest rather than on your back.
2. Aggressive Toy/Flower Sellers As you walk down Bourbon, people may try to place beaded necklaces, flower crowns, or glowing toys on your shoulder or head. * Once the item touches you, they will demand payment and make a scene if you refuse. * Action: Keep moving. If they place it on you, shrug your shoulders so it drops off, and do not look back.
3. Staying Safe After Midnight * Stick to the Main Drag: Bourbon Street itself is safe because of the crowds. However, do not wander down dark, empty side streets (like Dauphine or Burgundy) alone after midnight. * Know Your Limit: New Orleans drinks are famously strong (especially the Hurricane or Hand Grenade). Pace yourself. Intoxicated visitors are prime targets for scams. * Ride-Share Logistics: If you need a ride home late at night, walk one block over to Canal Street or Decatur Street to call your Uber/Lyft. Drivers cannot enter Bourbon Street blocks due to the police barricades.
