Frenchmen Street Music Guide: Nightlife & Live Jazz
Where the Music Lives If you want to hear authentic New Orleans jazz, blues, and brass band music, skip Bourbon Street and head to Frenchmen Street in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood (just outside the Quarter).
This three-block stretch is packed with music clubs, street brass bands, and a late-night outdoor art market.
Top Music Venues on Frenchmen * The Spotted Cat Music Club: Cozy, standing-room-only room featuring stellar swing jazz and early jazz bands. (Cash only, drink minimum). * Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro: The premier listening room in the city. Features ticketed sit-down jazz concerts from local legends like the Marsalis family. * Blue Nile: Great for high-energy funk, brass bands, and blues. * The Palace Market: A beautiful open-air market showcasing art, jewelry, and prints from local makers. Great for unique souvenirs.
Walking Safety & Logistics * Walking to Frenchmen: Frenchmen Street is about a 10-15 minute walk from Jackson Square. Walk down Decatur Street or Chartres Street. Avoid walking down Royal Street or Bourbon Street to get there after dark, as these residential blocks become very quiet and dark. * Street Musicians: Brass bands often set up in the intersection of Frenchmen and Chartres. They draw massive crowds and create a block-party vibe. Put a few dollars in the bucket if you stop to dance! * Ride-Share Safety: Frenchmen Street gets extremely congested at night. Walk one block north to Touro Street or west to Esplanade Avenue to call your ride home safely.
