Jackson Square & St. Louis Cathedral: Historic Travel Guide
The Heart of the French Quarter Jackson Square (originally *Place d'Armes*) is the physical and historic center of the French Quarter. Anchored by the majestic spires of St. Louis Cathedral, the square is a vibrant hub of artists, tarot card readers, street musicians, and carriage drivers.
Navigating the Artist Colony The iron fences surrounding Jackson Square are lined with local painters, sketch artists, and photographers. * This is a regulated historical artist colony. Buying art directly from the fence supports local creators. * Tarot & Fortune Tellers: They set up tables along the pedestrian walkways. Always agree on the price before they begin the reading to prevent surprise charges.
Cafe Du Monde Navigation (The Beignet Protocol) Located directly across the street from the square, Cafe Du Monde is a NOLA institution. * The Line Myth: The massive line you see wrapping around the block is for the takeout window. * Sit-Down Area: The outdoor seating area is open seating. Walk in, find an open table, sit down, and a server will be with you shortly. Do not stand in the street queue if you plan to eat there. * Best Hours: To avoid crowds entirely, visit between 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM, or late at night (they are open 24 hours on weekends).
Street Performers & Brass Bands The pedestrian mall in front of the cathedral regularly hosts brass bands and acrobatic street performers. * These performers are highly talented, but if you stand to watch an entire show or take photos/videos, it is customary (and expected) to tip a few dollars. * If you do not want to tip, do not photograph the performers, as some will ask you to delete the photo or pay.
